Death threats in fraud case ‘ignored’

The Times. The British authorities were accused last night of ignoring evidence about death threats and intimidation linked to a multimillion-pound Russian fraud, months before a “whistleblower” in the case was found dead outside his Surrey home.

Alexander Perepilichny, 44, whose cause of death is described as “unexplained”, had passed documents to campaigners fighting to expose the huge tax fraud in Russia that had led to the death of an anti-corruption lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky.

The alleged fraudsters are said to have stolen three companies from a British-based investment firm, Hermitage Capital, and used them to perpetrate the fraud.

In January and February, lawyers for Bill Browder, the founder of Hermitage Capital, passed a criminal complaint to the City of London Police, the Serious Fraud Office, the Financial Services Authority and Serious Organised Crime Agency, The Guardian reported last night.

It alleged that material used in the criminal conspiracy was sent from British soil and that lawyers working for Hermitage in Britain had been subjected to death threats made by phone, and intimidation via surveillance of their offices.

The Conservative MP Dominic Raab wrote to the same police and anti-fraud agencies again in August also encouraging an investigation after being contacted by Hermitage with respect to their complaints.

City of London Police said that it had met Hermitage but had found no evidence of British involvement in the alleged offences. The SFO, FSA and Soca declined to comment.

The Home Office confirmed it had been contacted by Mr Raab and that it was looking into his queries.

It’s time Hermitage & Firestone Duncan start considering a move of HQ to the US. We’re getting more progressive than the ol’ country may ever be! NY has worse ROC than most other places in the US, so I recommend other US cities.
