Rights activist Panfilova call for parliamentary probe into Magnitsky case

Human rights activists have proposed an independent parliamentary investigation into the case involving Hermitage Capital Management lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who died in a detention facility.

“We could really use what we haven’t had for a long time, an independent parliamentary investigation. We need a tertiary judge in this situation. We can also conduct an independent investigation, as it is accepted all over the world, which works very well in high-profile cases,” Yelena Panfilova, the head of the Center for Anti-Corruption Research and Initiative Transparency International Russia, told Interfax on Tuesday.

Panfilova said an independent investigation is needed because a deadlock situation has occurred in the Magnitsky case.

“We have reached a deadlock. We have done our own public investigation, Sergei Magnitsky’s colleagues have conducted their own investigation, and now we have the results of a state investigation, which was conducted by the agencies represented by the people whom Sergei Magnitsky suspected of involvement in the embezzlement of state funds,” she said.

There can be no quick solution to this situation. “We are saying they are to blame, and they are saying that Magnitsky was to blame and everyone around him is to blame,” Panfilova said.

Panfilova also proposed forming a group of investigators to work on the matter.
