Mother of ‘tortured’ Russian targeted

THE mother of an anti-corruption lawyer allegedly tortured to death in a Moscow jail has been harassed at her home by Kremlinfriendly journalists. The claim was made last week by Jamison Firestone, the former business partner of late father-of-two Sergei Magnitsky.

Magnitsky, 37, died mysteriously in prison last November.

The whistleblower lawyer was held for 358 days on fabricated tax evasion charges after testifying about the involvement of police officers in an alleged £150million fraud.

Now a team claiming to be from NTV, a station controlled by state-owned gas giant Gazprom, have followed his mother, tried to enter her Moscow home, carried out covert filming and bombarded her with “offensive” questions.

Bill Browder, the UK-based financier who had employed the dead lawyer, said: “The people who killed Sergei Magnitsky know no limits to their evil.

“After torturing an innocent man to death in a dark dungeon for one year, they are now going after his grieving mother. There is a special place in hell for people like this.”

The tormentors have described themselves as both journalists and estate agents. A formal complaint has been filed by Mr Firestone with the Russian Union of Journalists.

He claims that Magnitsky’s mother is being targeted in the run-up to the screening of an NTV film that attempts to justify her son’s persecution and death. He says it relies on fabrications by security officials and the Interior Ministry.
