London Rally: The True Faces of Russia
Khodorkovsky & Lebedev Communications Center
Where: London, UK; the South Bank near London Eye.
When: Monday, September 12th, 2011; 10 am
On September 12th, the day the Prime Minister of the UK, David Cameron, vists Russia, a political movement “Speak Up!” will hold a peaceful campaign, dedicated to his visit. Below is a press release from the organization announcing the protest:
If we could choose between free and fair rights of Russia’s citizens and improved international relations and Russia’s economy, we would undoubtedly go for freedom. And we are kindly asking the UK Prime Minister to consider this when making decisions about short term vs. strategic, long term mutual economic benefits between Russia and the UK.
During the course of 11 years of Putin’s governance many famous people fighting corruption and supporting the observance of rights and freedom were killed in Russia, including the famous journalist Anna Politkovskaya, Sergey Magnitsky, who was employed by the British law firm “Firestone Duncan”, and many others.
Furthermore, we would like to remind you of the case of Aleksandr Litvinenko being killed by Andrey Lugovoy, who instead of getting a prison sentence got a national award and a seat in the national parliament, that way ensuring himself sovereign immunity.
Our rights to speak up and oppose government’s actions are being silenced. Look at the case of Mikhail Khodorkovsky – he has been in prison for the last 8 years for expressing his views on Russia’s political situation and last year he was announced a ‘prisoner of conscience’ by Amnesty International.
The above-mentioned and numerous other cases demonstrate to the rest of the world how the current Russian’s political regime functions.
Our “Speak Up!” campaign will be attended by Russian businessmen, human rights activists and politicians. We would like to invite you to attend our event that will host a Q&A session and encourage an enthusiastic debate about the political landscape of Russia.
The campaign will be held on the September 12th at 10 am on the South Bank near London Eye. Photojournalists are especially welcome.
