Russia – Death of Sergei Magnitsky (October 25, 2011)

France is very attentively monitoring the investigation conducted by the Russian authorities to clarify the circumstances of Sergei Magnitsky’s death.

Please remember that following the July 2011 report by the “Council for Human Rights and Development of Civil Society,” which reports to the President of the Russian Federation, judicial proceedings were undertaken against several doctors in the Russian prison administration for not providing the necessary medical help to Sergei Magnitsky.

Russia must continue its investigation to determine all individual responsibilities in the context of fulfilling its international commitments and as a State having ratified the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.

France has taken note of the various reforms, including in the prison system, initiated by Russia in the wake of this case. France urges the Russian authorities to pursue and implement these reforms in order to best ensure detainees’ rights.
