Russian electoral commission head “honoured” to be on “Magnitskiy list”

[Presenter] Chairman of the Central Electoral Commission Vladimir Churov believes it is an honour to be on the so-called Magnitskiy list. He said this in a live broadcast on the Dozhd TV channel yesterday [18 October]. He also commented on the case of the lawyer of the Hermitage Capital foundation [Sergey Magnitskiy, who died in a pre-trial detention centre in Moscow in November 2009].

[Churov] I, certainly, have nothing to do with Magnitskiy. I have not seen him, I do not know him and have not heard about him before this incident with his death. I fully enforce the legislation of the Russian Federation, otherwise, I repeat this, any voter, a representative of a political party may sue me. All this can be solved, but I will go to observe the US presidential election in November 2012 only if I receive a personal invitation from [US Senator Benjamin] Cardin [reference to the so-called Cardin list of 60 Russian officials linked to Magnitskiy’s death]. I will not consider invitations from any other agency.

[Presenter] Churov did not specify how he had learned about being put on the black list.
