Second anniversary of Magnitsky death to be marked abroad

Interfax

A series of events to mark the second anniversary of Hermitage Capital lawyer Sergei Magnitsky’s death at a Moscow detention center, will be held in the United States and Europe, the Hermitage Capital’s press service has reported.

In memory of Sergei Magnitsky’s heroic resistance to corruption and bureaucratic tyranny, politicians, rights campaigners and cultural figures will hold a series of important events in the capitals of the United States, Britain and Germany, a Hermitage Capital spokesman told Interfax.

The German justice minister and Sergei Magnitsky’s mother will attend the inauguration of a permanent exhibition, titled Sergei Magnitsky – the Stronghold of Justice and Democracy in Russia, at the Berlin Wall museum, Checkpoint Charlie, on Tuesday, where Magnitsky’s personal diaries and letters, and also legal documents will be exhibited, he said.

A press briefing will be held and a documentary play, One Hour and Eighteen Minutes, about the last moments of Magnitsky’s life, will be performed in Washington under the patronage of the chairman of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, Congressman Chris Smith, and the Commission’s Co-Chairman, Senator Benjamin Cardin.

Staged by Russian playwright Yelena Gremina, the play is based on documents and Magnitsky’s letters and is about the last hour and eighteen minutes of his life, the spokesman said.

It is an acted-out trial of those guilty of his arrest and death, and it is unique in that all the characters are real people, he said.

Magnitsky died in Moscow’s Butyrka pretrial detention center on November 16, 2009, while awaiting trial on tax evasion charges.

Rights defenders insist that prison medics and law enforcement officers are to blame for his death that caused a huge public outcry in Russia and abroad.

On July 4, 2011, the Investigative Committee announced the results of an additional forensic examination. As a result, criminal charges were filed against Butyrka doctors Dmitry Kratov (Article 293 of the Criminal Code, “negligence”) and Larisa Litvinova (Article 109, “causing death by inadvertence”).

On August 2, the Prosecutor General’s Office re-opened a criminal investigation based on charges of tax evasion brought against Magnitsky.

In July, the U.S. State Department compiled a ‘black list’ of Russian officials it suspects of involvement in Magnitsky’s death. The list includes Federal Security Service (FSB) officers, top and medium-rank policemen, prison guards and medics, prosecutors and tax inspectors.

As a measure of reply, 11 U.S. citizens have been entered on Russia’s ‘black list.’ займ на карту срочно без отказа payday loan https://zp-pdl.com/get-quick-online-payday-loan-now.php https://zp-pdl.com/get-a-next-business-day-payday-loan.php займ на карту онлайн
