Magnitsky’s colleague writes open letter to presidential candidates
Jamison Firestone, a colleague of late Hermitage Capital lawyer Sergei Magnitsky who died at a Moscow jail, has called on the Russian presidential candidates to take charge of the Magnitsky inquest.
Today Sergei Magnitsky’s colleague has sent an open letter to all the Russian presidential candidates, urging them to put an end to the mocking of Sergei Magnitsky’s relatives by Russian law enforcement agencies, the company said in a statement obtained by Interfax on Thursday.
Despite the unprecedented public outrage both in and outside Russia, law enforcement agencies have not advanced in their investigation of these crimes, having blamed only ordinary doctors, or petty criminals and drug addicts, or Magnitsky himself, according to the letter sent to Vladimir Putin, Mikhail Prokhorov, Sergei Mironov, Gennady Zyuganov and Vladimir Zhirinovsky.
Firestone then asks the candidates to put a full stop in this disgraceful case. Russia and the world will believe in your sincerity in the fight against corruption when Magnitsky’s murderers and thieves end up in prison, the letter said.
Firestone also sent a request to the Russian Investigative Committee, asking it to launch a criminal inquiry against high-ranking prosecutors and police officers for abetting and concealing the persons, who were exposed by Magnitsky in the embezzlement of billions of rubles in budget funds and retaliated with the reprisal against him.
Magnitsky died at Moscow’s Butyrka pretrial detention center on November 16, 2009, while awaiting trial on tax evasion charges.
Human rights defenders claimed that prison medics and law enforcement officers are to blame for his death, which caused a huge public outcry in Russia and abroad.
On July 4, 2011, the Investigative Committee announced the results of an additional forensic examination. As a result, criminal charges were filed against Butyrka doctors Dmitry Kratov (“negligence”) and Larisa Litvinova (“causing death by inadvertence”).
The Kremlin Human Rights Council on July 5 2011 handed a report on an independent probe into Magnitsky’s death to President Dmitry Medvedev.
In August 2011, in view of the Constitutional Court’s ruling obliging the investigators to inquire about the relatives’ attitude toward closing the criminal prosecution of the deceased person for non-rehabilitating reasons, the Prosecutor General’s Office revoked its resolution to end the criminal case against Magnitsky.
