Corrupt Russian Officials Involved in $230 Million Corruption and Death of Sergei Magnitsky Must Be Banned to Enter the US

By the end of April 2010, five months after Sergei Magnitsky’s death, none of the officials who were involved in his torture, death, or the corruption he exposed have been charged for any crimes in the Russian Federation. To challenge their apparent impunity at home, U.S. Senator Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD) as Chairman of the U.S. Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (U.S. Helsinki Commission) requested that the U.S. State Department immediately impose permanent visa sanctions against these 60 Russian officials and others involved in a $230 million corruption case exposed by Sergei Magnitsky, and his persecution in custody. The initiative has received an overwhelming support in Russia, where the list of corrupt officials has become known as the “Cardin List”.

U.S. Helsinki Commission Letter on Visa Sanctions to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton

In a letter addressed to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Senator Cardin demanded that the State Department “immediately cancel and permanently withdraw the U.S visa privileges of all those involved in this crime, along with their dependents and family members.”

U.S. Helsinki Commission Hearings on Corruption and False Arrest of Sergei Magnitsky

Prior to Sergei Magnitsky’s death,  On 23 June 2009, Senator Cardin has held hearings on Russian official corruption at the US Senate. During the hearings, William Browder, CEO of Hermitage Capital Managment described in great detail the case of Sergei Magnitsky and the fraud committed against the Hermitage Fund and the Russian Government by corrupt officials in the Russian Interior Ministry. In Mr. Browder’s testimony, said “All too often in today’s Russia, there is no contradiction in someone being a business executive, senior government official and crime boss all at the same time.” Click here to read the full testimony.
