Famous businessman refuses to take part in Russian Business Week 2011

[Presenter] Famous businessman Aleksandr Lebedev has refused to take part in the Russian Business Week in London due to be opened by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov today. The entrepreneur has explained his decision by the worsening of business climate in Russia. Aleksandr Borzenko has the details.

[Correspondent] The entrepreneur is afraid of leaving Russia as. in his own words. he may not be allowed back into the country. He said his business had come under attack on the part of corrupt employees of law enforcement agencies. It is noteworthy that the day before [14 February] head of the Hermitage Capital William Browder proposed that they combat corruption together. Browder believes that the same people who once attacked his own business may be behind the attacks Lebedev is talking about. It seems that they may part of the organized group that was behind the affair disclosed by [Hermitage Capital lawyer] Sergey Magnitskiy, as a result of which he was in effect killed.

The Russian Business Forum that Lebedev intends to ignore will be held at the London School of Economics in 15-18 February. Russian Foreign Minister will meet businessmen from various countries and discuss cooperation prospects for the next decade. Head of the Russian Railways Vladimir Yakunin, head of Goldman Sachs [Internationa] Peter Sutherland, Chairman of the Barclays Capital Board [Hans Joerg Rudloff] and other leading entrepreneurs have already confirmed they will take part in the forum.

[Speaking to Ekho Moskvy later on 15 February, Lebedev said that he did not want his subordinates “to fight police turncoats” while he was away, Russian Ekho Moskvy quoted him saying at 0900 gmt.

“Several criminal cases have been made up, each more absurd than the other against practically every company I own, beginning from the company that produces potatoes and ending with the bank.
