At least gas was flowing again to Belarus by the time Russian president Dmitry Medvedev sat down to a White House lunch on Thursday with his US counterpart, Barack Obama. Yet the timing was still unfortunate, exposing once more the gap between what Russia says and how it acts. In the US, Mr Medvedev schmoozed Mr Obama and Silicon Valley executives, sending his first tweets on Twitter, with the message that a Russia bent on creating a high-tech economy was open to investors. At home, it was engaged in another energy fist-fight with a neighbour.

Russian Ministry Pursuing Another Lawyer In Magnitsky Death Case

Russian investigators are seeking the disbarment of a lawyer working for Hermitage Capital, part of what the asset manager says is an ongoing campaign to prevent evidence of official fraud worth hundreds of millions of dollars from coming to light.
The case drew international attention after the death last year of lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who was denied medical treatment behind bars. Russian leaders pledged an investigation but have demonstrated few results other than the firing of several prison officials and a high-ranking Moscow policeman.

Russian Government Fails to Hold Perpetrators To Account
The European Union should urge Russia to make good on its reform promises by making concrete human rights improvements, Human Rights Watch said today. The EU and Russia will hold a summit meeting May 31 through June 1, 2010 in Rostov-on-Don, Russia. EU Questions Russia Over Magnitsky’s Death
A senior European Union official questioned Russia’s interior and justice ministers Wednesday about the death in custody of Hermitage Capital lawyer Sergei Magnitsky. Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom raised concerns in a meeting with Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev and Justice Minister Alexander Konovalov about Moscow’s failure to investigate officials involved in a $230 million corruption scam surrounding Magnitsky’s death.
