Rights campaigners question Interior Ministry’s version of Magnitsky’s death
Human rights campaigners distrust the Interior Ministry’s version of lawyer Sergei Magnitsky’s death as well as the ministry’s claims that he was arrested because he could flee abroad.
“The facts we possess support our version that he died as a result of being beaten. He was actually killed. Let them prove the opposite,” head of the Moscow Public Monitoring Commission and Moscow Helsinki Group member Valery Borshchyov told Interfax on Thursday.
Earlier in the day, chief of the Interior Ministry’s Investigative Department Pavel Lapshov denied any “cause-and-effect link between alleged beatings or any hardships or deprivations he [Magnitsky] had allegedly been put through”.

Rights activist wants investigator Dmitriyeva suspected of bribery to be questioned under Magnitsky case
Russian Interior Ministry investigator Nelly Dmitriyeva, who has been detained on suspicion of accepting a major bribe, should be questioned under an inquiry into Hermitage Capital auditor Sergei Magnitsky’s death, says Moscow Helsinki Group member Valery Borshchyov.
“I would like everyone included in the Cardin list and having relation to the Magnitsky case to be thoroughly questioned by the Investigative Committee, which is paying too little attention to these people today,” Borshchyov, who is participating in an independent public investigation into the Magnitsky case, told Interfax on Wednesday.

Inquiry: Magnitsky Beaten by Guards
Eight prison guards severely beat lawyer Sergei Magnitsky shortly before his 2009 death in pretrial detention, an activist said Tuesday, providing a new twist to allegations that Magnitsky had been tortured in prison.
An account of the beating is included in a 40-page report on Magnitsky’s death that the Kremlin’s human rights council presented to President Dmitry Medvedev on Tuesday, said Valery Borshchyov, who headed an independent investigation into the death that formed the basis for the report.
The report also lays blame on prison hospital staff and the investigators who jailed Magnitsky for his death.

In a landmark investigation Into the cell death of Moscow lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, a special Kremlin commission Is likely to publicly Implicate iriGmDors of the Interior Ministry and FSB.
The metal cage used for prisoners in courtroom No 14 at the Tverskoi regional court was empty during a recent hearing, its door wide open, when the court considered the arrest of Ivan Cherkasov, a senior executive at British investment fund Hermitage Capital.
Mr Cherkasov, who lives in London, said he has no intention of returning to face charges of tax evasion he says are false. He said his arrest was an act of revenge by members of the Russian security services.
