Russia: Charges against Magnitskiy case doctors see mixed response
Medical officers Larisa Litvinova and Dmitriy Kratov from the Butyrka pre-trial detention centre have been charged with the manslaughter of Hermitage Capital fund lawyer Sergey Magnitskiy, the privately-owned Interfax news agency reported on 12 August. They are said to have been negligent in providing care to Magnitskiy before his transfer to the Matrosskaya Tishina remand centre, where he later died.
Litvinova and Kratov were among those identified by rights activists as being complicit in Magnitskiy’s death. The Russian rights activists, who were involved in the independent probe, have not responded with a great deal of enthusiasm, expressing concern that charges against Litvinova and Kratov will become something of a smoke screen.

FSB, police officials could figure in Magnitsky death investigation
Officials from the Federal Security Service (FSB) and the Interior Ministry may be implicated in the death of lawyer Sergei Magnitsky in police custody, a member of the Kremlin’s human rights council said on Thursday..
Magnitsky died after almost a year in a notorious Moscow pre-trial detention center in November 2009. He had been arrested on tax evasion charges just days after claiming that police investigators had stolen $230 million from the state.
On Wednesday a council report said his death was likely to have been the result of a beating and that the charges against him were fraudulent. Human rights activists and his former colleagues allege the officers he had accused were involved in his death, which was originally said to have been the result of “heart failure.”

Report Calls for Prosecution of Officials in Death of Russian Lawyer
A human rights panel that advises President Dmitri A. Medvedev on Wednesday published a damning report on the case of Sergei L. Magnitsky, arguing that highly-placed investigators and prison officials share responsibility for his death in state custody.
Among the surprises in the report is the assertion that Mr. Magnitsky’s death may have been brought about by a beating at the hands of a team of eight psychiatric orderlies at a clinic where he was transported after suffering from abdominal pain and vomiting. Government investigators have attributed his death to heart disease that went undetected during his 11 months in custody.

After Russian Death, Inquiry Doors Open and Shut

It was more than a year ago when six members of an obscure oversight panel filed into Butyrskaya Prison to look into the death of a prisoner. They were hardly an intimidating bunch: retired women in hats, mostly, scribbling their observations in notebooks, regarded by the prison staff as a minor irritant, like fleas.
In a country whose law enforcement structures wield enormous power, it is easy enough to ignore civilian watchdog groups. But this day was different. When the doctors were led in and told to take a seat, the panel’s leader, a veteran human rights activist named Valery V. Borshchev, felt something unfamiliar in the air.
