Members of Presidential Council take part in questioning re: Magnitsky case

The Council under the President of the Russian Federation for the Promotion of Civil Society and Human Rights took part in the questioning of defendants in the so-called Magnitsky case, Mikhail Fedotov, the Council’s head, who takes part in the second Russia-EU Civil Society Forum, told reporters here on Thursday.

“We have received an investigator’s invitation to dispatch members of the Council to take part in the questioning of defendants in the case on Magnitsky’s death,” he said. He noted that this joint work had already been done and members of the Council had taken part in the questioning. “This was an unprecedented level of openness to public scrutiny that set a very good example. We have reached agreement with chairman of the Investigation Committee Bastrykin that such practice should become norm,” Fedotov added.

Blacklists related to Magnitsky case may be cancelled at some point

Russian Foreign Ministry Ambassador at Large Anvar Azimov does not rule out the prospective cancellation of the blacklists related to the Magnitsky case.

“We are all civilized people and should oppose any blacklists,” he said, noting that Russia had made similar blacklists on the principles of the ‘step for step’ diplomacy.

RF reserves right to react to US sanctions over Magnitsky case

Russia reserves the right to adequately react if the United States uses sanctions against Russian officials over the Magnitsky case, Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said on Thursday.
“We reacted to the fact that what happened and happens on the possible decision on using sanctions by the American Administration,” the diplomat said.

“If this is done in practice, we reserve the right to adequately react to this move,” he added.
“That kind of lists has nothing in common with partnership and the declared policy to developing strategic relations with different countries,” he stressed.

“In any democratic state competent juridical structures decide if any person or a group of persons are guilty or not of any unlawful deeds,” Lukashevich said.
