Illness That Sergei Magnitsky Developed in Pre-Trial Detention


The following are official medical documents that describe in detail the illnesses that Sergei Magnitsky developed while he was in pretrial detention

  • Letter from the Head of the Medical Unit of Matrosskaya Tishina Prison, V. Stepanov, to Magnitsky’s lawyers confirming that Magnitsky was diagnosed on 1 July 2009 with calculous cholecystitis and prescribed a further examination (ultrasound) and surgery within one month (14 July 2009)
  • Letter from the Head of Butyrka, D. Komnov, and the Head of Butyrka Medical Unit (D. Kratov) to Magnitsky’s lawyers stating that Magnitsky’s echocardiogram reading was normal and confirming that his conditions of gallstones and cholecystitis and pancreatitis were in an acute stage (11 November 2009)
  • Letter from F. Tagiev, Head of Matrosskaya Tishina Prison to Magnitsky’s lawyers stating that Magnitsky arrived from Butyrka to the hospital at Matrosskaya Tishina on 16 Novemer 2009 with a possible diagnosis of gallstones, calculous cholecystitis and acute pancreatitis (3 December 2009)
  • Certificate of Confirmation from F. Tagiev, Head of Matrosskaya Tishina Prison, and S. Mazurov, Head of Matrosskaya Tishina Hospital, stating that Magnitsky had arrived on 16 November 2009 with a diagnosis of gallstones, acute calculous cholecystitis and acute pancreatitis (4 December 2009)

Response from Head of Butyrka’s Medical Unit (14 July 2009)
Letter from the Head of the Medical Unit of Matrosskaya Tishina Prison, V. Stepanov, to Magnitsky’s lawyers confirming that Magnitsky was diagnosed on 1 July 2009 with calculous cholecystitis and was prescribed a further examination (ultrasound) and surgery within one month.
