Sergei Magnitsky’s Heartbreaking Pleas for Medical Attention

Below are examples of the repeated requests of Sergei Magnitsky for medical treatment while in custody.  Despite a clear diagnosis of acute cholecystitis and pancreatitis and the need for an ultrasound and corrective surgery, all of his petitions for treatment were denied by Oleg Silchenko and the prison authorities.

• Complaint by Sergei Magnitsky to the Head of Butyrka requesting an immediate meeting due to the threat to his health arising from ongoing abuse and mistreatment in detention (9 August 2009)
• Complaint by Sergei Magnitsky to the Head of Butyrka following repeated requests for medical treatment demanding an immediate medical examination due to the serious deterioration of his health while in detention (11 August 2009)
• Complaint by Sergei Magnitsky’s Lawyers to the Head of Butyrka demanding an immediate ultrasound examination with accompanying treatment (19 August 2009)
• Complaint by Sergei Magnitsky’s Lawyers to Interior Ministry Investigator Oleg Silchenko demanding an immediate ultrasound examination with accompanying treatment (19 August 2009)
• Complaint by Sergei Magnitsky to the Head of the Medical Unit of Butyrka demanding an immediate appointment with a surgeon and demanding an ultrasound examination and surgery for cholecystitis and pancreatitis (25 August 2009)
• Letter from Sergei Magnitsky to His Lawyer, Dmitri Kharitonov, summarizing a visit with a prison doctor, who told him “You should have gotten treatment when you were free” and asked “Do you expect to be treated every month?” (25 August 2009)
• Petition from Sergei Magnitsky to the Head of Butyrka asking for an immediate doctor consultation due to his worsening health (26 August 2009)
• Letter to the Head of the Medical Unit of Butyrka consenting to the release of his medical records to his lawyers (21 October 2009)
• Complaint to the Head of the Medical Unit of Butyrka (i) summarizing the recent deprivation of food for 24 hours due to a court visit and the deprivation of sleep due to a nighttime cell transfer; (ii) describing acute abdominal pain and vomiting; and (iii) demanding the medical examination that was prescribed in July but had not been provided (13 November 2009)
